Clay, Alabama BSL Work Session July 29, 2013

The Clay City Council will meet Monday July 29 at 6:30 p.m. to continue discussing modification of the City’s breed-specific ordinance that bans “pit bulls” and other “vicious dogs.”   According to AL.com,

Mayor Charles Webster said today City Attorney Alan Summers has proposed lifting the breed specific language. The ordinance might add language that would prohibit anyone from operating a kennel where dogs are trained to fight.

Several things are striking here. First, as I noted in a prior post I wondered why Clay had passed breed-specific legislation (BSL) against so-called “pit bulls” in the first place since Clay Sheriff Mike Hale said he was approached by a pack of aggressive dogs which he originally claimed were pit bulls but later said he believed to be Rottweilers, not pit bulls.   Have we ever gotten an answer to that question?

Second, while I applaud Clay City Attorney Alan Summers’ attempts to remove the breed-specific language from the ordinance, why was language prohibiting dog fighting kennels not in the original ordinance if that was a problem in Clay?   Better yet, why isn’t that outlawed under state law for heaven’s sake?

We’ve got lots of questions and it doesn’t seem like we’ve got a whole lot of answers yet.
