As we posted earlier this month, Jessica and Marcin Kowalewski lobbied the Canton, Michigan Township Board of Trustees to remove the ‘vicious’ label for so-called pit bulls from Canton’s dangerous dog law.  

Thankfully, the Kowalewskis were successful in their lobbying at the December 10 meeting, and Township Attorney Kristin Kolb has undertaken an ordinance revision, under the direction of Township Supervisor Phil LaJoy, to remove the breed-specific language from Canton’s breed-specific law (BSL). The ordinance amendment could potentially be ready in early January 2014, and would come to the full Board of Trustees for a vote at that time.  

Congratulations to the Kowaleskis for proving that even a few people can make a difference.   Special thanks also to Mr. LaJoy, Ms. Kolb, and the Board of Trustees for actually listening to their residents and acting to represent them and their dogs, and for holding irresponsible dog owners accountable, regardless of the breed of dog they own.
