Ontario’s Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Randy Hillier will be re-introducing Bill 16 — formerly “Hershey’s Bill” — to repeal Ontario’s breed-specific ban on “pit bulls.” Why? Because as the Toronto Humane Society and Hamilton, Ontario have both acknowledged, Ontario’s breed-specific law (BSL) is not working.
Hamilton and the Toronto Humane Society aren’t the only ones making the case against Ontario’s “pit bull” ban. Bruce Roney, Executive Director of the Ottawa, Ontario Humane Society, likewise argued that “pit bulls” and their owners shouldn’t be discriminated against in the province:
“I think people should be concerned about aggressive behaviour in dogs and dogs biting, but that’s not exclusive to pit bulls,” he said.”All breeds of dogs ” given certain circumstances ” are going to bite. And the way to manage it isn’t to identify one breed as bad or worse than the other.”
MPP Hillier will re-introduce Bill 16 within weeks in Ontario’s legislature at Queen’s Park in Toronto.
